About Řrjan Nilsen
Readers of Totally Tae Kwon Do may not know that Orjan Nilsen's native language is Norwegian, as he writes so prolifically and comfortably in English for his blog, Traditional Taekwondo Ramblings, and for Totally Tae Kwon Do.

Most readers also may not know that Orjan spent a year at Chosun University in South Korea between 2007 - 2008. Living and training at one of the oldest and most prestigious private universities in the homeland of Taekwondo with talented martial artists who aspired to compete in the Olympics continues to be a memorable and fertile experience for him.

Like many students of the martial arts, Orjan was first introduced to the martial arts exclusively through film. He saw the original Karate Kid at an age he could not yet read the Norwegian subtitles or understand English. After Karate Kid, he and an older cousin secretly snuck off to watch old Jackie Chan movies - The Young Master, Drunken Master and Snake in the Eagle's Shadow - as well as the iconic films of Bruce Lee. Orjan also credits the more age-appropriate Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons.

To date, Orjan has published approximately 54 articles in the pages of Totally Tae Kwon Do, the majority of these since the summer of 2012. Like Master Doug Cook and Dr. George Vitale, Orjan demonstrates an affinity for specific topics, such as books about Taekwondo and sister arts; traditional training and equipment; the Taegeuk color belt and Yudanja black belt patterns of Kukkiwon Taekwondo; applications of techniques from these poomsae; and lost, forgotten or misunderstood aspects of Taekwondo. These subjects stem, of course, from a profound interest in the minute details of the art's history.

Orjan freely and regularly communicates with martial artists from around the world regardless of style.
