On Sunday, 15th October, students from Rayners Lane Taekwon-do Academy travelled to Kent to compete in the 'Kick It 2000' Taekwon-do Championships

The day started with patterns & Lloyd Lewis picked up the Academys first medal of the day by winning a silver. Next was sparring, again Lloyd won a bronze having just stepped up from the pee-wee divisions, making him somewhat smaller than a lot of competitors but fighting with the indomitable spirit of taekwon-do.

Kate Barry had a good run in the ladies coloured belt division, storming to the final & winning the gold. For many of the students it was their first competition. Ade Odunaiya, Parvez Sultan, Sam Herridge & Chris Turner all took part for the first time & learnt a lot.

Special credit goes to Parvez, who despite some sparkling performances was unlucky not to place in the medals. I myself won a bronze medal in the sparring, going out in the semis to Elliot Walker, who I met in the finals last time, making it one all.

The day ended with the team fighting. The Rayners Lane junior team, consisting of Kate, Ade & Parvez did well but didn't make it into the medal stakes. In the senior teams, a last minute entry by myself, Elliot Walker & Claire Bennett of Edmonton TKD was put in & the team stormed through to the finals taking out the Edmonton 'A' squad, one of the hosts squads & facing the Edmonton 'B' squad in the finals. After a tense bout it was a draw, leaving two fighters to fight it off in a sudden death first point to win match. Elliot Walker faced Grant Coddrington & unfortunately caught a good side kick from Grant leaving the team to settle for the silver medal position.

All in all it was a good day. Mr Kam Bains (the host) does an excellant job in organising this event.
